                       MEASURING FOR YOUR WALLPAPER

The best way to do this is to call an installer.  Almost any installer will provide a free estimate.
Going to your local Sherwin Williams or Lowe's with just your square footage doesn't always end up well.  So here is the way I do it.

Measure one wall at a time for width and height and multiply those numbers.  For example, if the wall is 15 long by 9 feet high, 15x9=135 sf.
Most wallpaper is sold in double rolls with the SF being 56 SF.  But for numbers sake just round it to 50 SF because there is usually waste.  So if you have 135 SF divided by 50 you are going to need three double rolls.

Do not take out for windows or doors while measuring.  That is mistake number one that people make when measuring.  It is better to have too much wallpaper because you can return a roll as long as it is unopened.  There is usually a restocking fee, but it is better than running out in the middle of the job and having to order more  wallpaper that might, or might not, come in the same dye lot as your original order.

                                      TEXTURED CEILINGS

The pictures shown are of a textured ceiling and the process needed to bring the surface to industry standards in order to install the wallpaper.

Picture #1 shows a Monterrey texture, or a knockdown texture.

Picture #2 shows the floating or skimming with joint compound that is required to smooth the surface.  Depending on the texture and or wallpaper this process might take up to three coats of skimming.

Picture #3 has the surface sanded and primed with a bonding, sealer type primer.  Kilz 2, a latex based primer, is being used on this project, but there are other products that will work just as well.  We try to steer away from oil based primers due to the industrial type odor that can be long lasting and unpleasant for an occupied residence. These two steps are very important as they are the foundation for the wallcovering.  The smooth surface ensures there are no bumps, ridges or low spots on the walls or ceilings. The primer provides  better adhesion along with easier removal when it comes time to change or remove the wallpaper.

Picture #4 is the finished product.

No matter who you choose to install your wallpaper or if you decide to DIY as a weekend project, these are the steps that will make for a better look.  If the walls are already smooth, a good primer is still a necessary step before installing your wallpaper.
